Introduction to Routing
Start from To Tei Wan on Shek O Road and walk along the ridge path to Shek O Peak. Then walk further to reach the Shek O Peak Lookout, where you can sit on the bench and take a break to appreciate the picturesque scenery of Ng Fan Chau and Tai Tau Chau of the Stanley Peninsula up front, and Tung Lung Island from afar, and also the mesmerizing view of Stanley, Tung Lung Island, Redhill Peninsula and Tai Tam Bay area at the back. You may even see people paragliding there. Continue towards Wan Cham Shan, the high and low undulating of this trail is like a sleeping dragon, hence renowned for its name “Dragon’s Back”. It has been selected as one of the “Best Hiking Routes in Hong Kong” by the Lonely Planet Guide and recommended by CNN Tourism as one of “Hong Kong Island’s Five Novice Hiking Routes”! Despite the steep mountain paths along the way, the scenery on both sides of the bay is breathtaking. (Note This section of the mountain trail is not tree-shaded, therefore sun and rain gear need to be brought as you could be exposed to strong sun and wind for more than half an hour on the trail.)
After that, go downhill along Pottinger Peak Country Trail to arrive at the end point the Big Wave Bay. Prehistoric rock carving can be found on the stone shore of Big Wave Bay. Similar to the rock carving on Tung Lung Island, patterns of figures and animals are faintly visible on the rock carving, which is now preserved as a Declared Monument of Hong Kong. These cultural art works are believed to be blessings for early fishermen or guidelines for sea fishing.
