The 6th CMHK Hong Kong Hiking Festival

(Hong Kong – 14 January, 2024) The 6th CMHK Hong Kong Hiking Festival, jointly organized by China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited (CMHK) and the Hong Kong Hiking Association, China (HKHA), was successfully held today. With the theme “We walk together toward a promising future!”, this year’s hiking festival invited citizens and tourists from Hong Kong to participate, aiming to let everyone experience firsthand the unique natural beauty of Hong Kong’s mountains and showcase the city’s distinctive charm and excitement to the world. The event received an enthusiastic response, with over 1,800 participants registered.

The CMHK Hong Kong Hiking Festival started in 2018 to promote hiking activities and raise awareness of walking and hiking to the citizens, as well as establishing hiking as one of Hong Kong’s trademarks. This year’s event is also an important practice in response to the Hong Kong government’s “Hello! Hong Kong” campaign, demonstrating CMHK’s commitment not only to promoting health awareness but also to promoting local tourism and cultural exchanges. In the future, CMHK will utilize the hiking festival to encourage more citizens to participate in outdoor activities and promote inclusive community development. This year, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the festival has invited tourists visiting Hong Kong to join and experience the unique charm of hiking in the city.

The opening ceremony took place at 10 a.m. today at Victoria Peak in Hong Kong, honourable guests were invited to join the event, included Mr. LING Hao, Co-Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Chairman of CMHK; Dr. Bernard CHAN Pak Li, , JP, Deputy Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr. ZHANG Zhihua, Director General of the Youth Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Dr the Honourable KO Wing-man, GBS, JP, Co-Chairman of the Organizing Committee, member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and member of the Executive Council; Dr Stanley MA Ching Hing, BBS, Co-Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Chairman of HKHA; Mr. WANG Hua, Chairman and CEO of CMI; Mr. YU Xiao, President of the Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association; Mr. PUI Kwan Kay, SBS, BBS, MH, Vice Chairman of the Organizing Committee and President of the Hong Kong Chinese Importers’ and Exporters’ Association; Mr. GUO Shaowei, Deputy Minister of the Economic Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr. SHANG Hailong, member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council; Mr. LO Yan Lai, MH, JP, Vice Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Honorary President of the Hong Kong Youth Rewards Program; Mr. LEE Sai Wing, member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council; and Colonel Matthew WONG Wai Man, ED, Vice Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Commandant of the Hong Kong Adventure Corps.

During the opening ceremony, Mr. LING Hao, Chairman of CMHK, expressed in his opening speech that in recent years, the CMHK Hong Kong Hiking Festival has seen increasing participation from citizens, diversified activities, and growing social influence. Currently, Hong Kong is entering a critical period of “economic development through collaboration.” The hiking festival will also enter a new stage. We hope to promote the festival’s “green, humanistic and harmonious” essence by deepening its content and expanding participation from Hong Kong citizens, building Hong Kong as the most favorable place for hiking in the world, attracting tourists and talents from around the world to Hong Kong, revitalizing the tourism industry, and energizing the Hong Kong economy.

Dr. Bernard CHAN Pak Li , JP, Deputy Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, mentioned in his speech that Hong Kong’s landscape of mountains and seas is a unique tourism resource that attracts visitors from home and abroad. He expressed gratitude to CMHK for organizing the annual hiking festival, which promotes Hong Kong’s hiking culture, helps promote health awareness, and enhances Hong Kong’s international influence as a tourist city. Chinese-funded institutions and various sectors have made unremitting efforts in Hong Kong’s “economic development through collaboration.” In the future, we must continue to move forward, uphold the spirit of “daring to think and act, and doing good and achieving success,” and strive in our respective fields to contribute more to Hong Kong’s economic development and social progress.

The event invited several gold medal athletes to share their experiences and lead the participants in warm-up exercises, included representatives from the Hong Kong Esports Team, namely CHAN Cheuk Kit, LAW Hing Lung, YIP Wai Lam, YIP Ho Lam and YUEN Pak Lam, also MA Sin Yi from the Hong Kong China Bodybuilding Team, and athletes recently achieved excellent results at the World Wushu Championships, He Jianxin and Mo Uen Ying. Additionally, three energetic artists from the “STARS Academy” talent show, Chantel YIU Cheuk Faye, Felix LAM Chi Lok and Sherman POON Ching Man, showed their support and boosted the atmosphere for the participants.

The hiking event commenced right after the honourable guests, athlete representatives, “STARS Academy” artists, and representatives from supporting organizations fired the starters pistol. The participants set off from the Hong Kong Peak Galleria and followed Lugard Road to Pok Fu Lam Road, covering a total distance of 4.6 kilometers, to enjoy different views of the Hong Kong Island scenery along the way.
